Tom Durkin, Development Academy Director

Brian Ainscough, Director of Coaching announced that Tom Durkin will be joining the Bolts as the new Director of the Development Academy.  Tom will guide the Development Academy teams through their inaugural 10 month season.  "Tom is considered to be one of the top coaches in the country. We are delighted that he has agreed to come on board", said Ainscough.

Tom Durkin most recently served as Academy Director for IMG Academies.  He has coached at every level from youth soccer to Major League Soccer and US National Teams. As the Bradenton Academics’ (Premiere Development League - PDL) Head Coach, he led the Academy’s PDL team to over 100 wins and the 2009 PDL National Semi-Finals. Additionally, he has two Dallas Cup Championships and two PDL South East Conference Championships to his name and his 2008-09 USSF Academy League team finished third in the nation. He has also served as an assistant coach for both the U-17 National team and the Tampa Bay Mutiny, an Olympic Development Program Coach for both boys and girls, and Head Coach at Richland College, Union College, and Rutgers University.

Tom’s love of soccer began in Brazil, where he spent his early childhood years. He returned to the United States during his high school years, and received a soccer scholarship to Davis & Elkins College, later transferring to University of South Florida, and finishing up at Kean University.

Marco Koolman, Development Academy Staff

Ainscough added, "We are extremely delighted that Marco Koolman has agreed to re-join the Bolts and will serve as a member of the Development Academy Coaching Staff".

Marco was recently named the new head men’s soccer coach at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA.  Koolman owns a career record of 201-75-28 as a collegiate head coach, and currently ranks 13th all-time in NCAA Division II history with a .707 career winning percentage.

Koolman comes to Holy Cross from the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, where he has served as the head coach and director of soccer since July of 2011. He was previously on the staff at Boston College for two years, during the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Koolman also spent nine seasons as the head coach at Franklin Pierce University from 2000-2008, with the Ravens winning the NCAA Division II national championship in 2007.  

He was named National Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 2007, in addition to being honored as the NSCAA New England Coach of the Year three times (2004, 2006 and 2007).

Prior to his time at Franklin Pierce, Koolman was the head coach at Gannon University from 1991-1996 and earned NSCAA National Coach of the Year honors in 1993.

A native of the Netherlands, Koolman earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Gannon in 1991, then went on to receive a master’s degree in health services administration from Gannon in 2001. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Golden Knights from 1987-1990, and still ranks second all-time at Gannon with 44 career assists.

Burke explained, "over the past 25 years, FC Greater Boston has become known as one of the premier soccer clubs in New England, preparing soccer players to play at the top levels in college and professionally. Over the last few years, the club’s superb reputation has continued to spread both domestically, and internationally. The organization has established affiliations with the Bayside Bolts in Rhode Island; recently announced the establishment of the FC Londonderry Bolts in New Hampshire; and of course, last year announced our partnership with Celtic FC, the premier soccer club in Glasgow, Scotland. The club's goal is to continue to expand strategically, providing an opportunity for top players in New England to become part of the Bolts organization."

The Bolts international affiliation with Celtic FC was brought about due to the generous support of Nike. Brian Ainscough, Director of Coaching, discussed the value of our relationship with Celtic FC. "Our goal here is give Bolts players training opportunities with some of the top international coaches in the world, and to give our elite players consideration for playing professionally for Celtic FC. We will do this by bringing Celtic FC coaches over to conduct camps and clinics; by sending Bolts coaches and players to train in Scotland; and by having Celtic FC scouts at games and training to evaluate players. We believe this is an extraordinary opportunity for our players and one that sets us apart".

Elliott Pratt, CEO, added, "We believe that our new name and logo reflect all the exciting developments going on within the club.   Our Bolts players and families should rest assured that our new look does not mean any change to our mission, administration, or operations. Brian Ainscough on FC Londonderry Bolts

Brian Ainscough, Bolts Director of Coaching announced that the club is expanding to New Hampshire, with teams beginning league play fall of 2012. "We are extremely excited to establish a full Bolts club in Londonderry, New Hampshire. The new club will be known as FC Londonderry Bolts. After a very successful year partnering with Londonderry United, the Bolts organization decided that there was a tremendous opportunity for us to offer the talented and committed younger soccer players the opportunity to play with Bolts coaches, using the Bolts Training System, locally, reducing the amount of travel time placed on younger players and their families. Players in the U10-U12 age groups will continue to have the opportunity to play travel soccer with their town clubs. This is an added opportunity for talented soccer players in New Hampshire to receive additional soccer training at the highest level. The teams we worked with this past year have done extremely well (see article below on GU10 Londonderry team), and we look forward to their continued success and development." 

Ainscough added "we are very pleased to appoint Emma Okonkwo as Director of Coaching and Joel Ogbunamiri as Assistant Director for our new Londonderry Club. Both Emma and Joel have significant soccer experience; have been working successfully with players and staff in Londonderry for the last year; and are committed to ensuring player development".

Williams, 22, was a high-scoring forward for the FC Greater Boston Bolts club team and the Rivers School. While playing for the US Under-17 team, which reached the second round of the 2007 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, Williams was moved to the back line by current Union assistant John Hackworth.

Williams also played one season for the University of North Carolina, then joined the Union late in the 2010 MLS season.  Williams started 32 games last season, scoring his first MLS goal in a 3-0 win over the Revolution at Gillette Stadium July 17.

According to a team source, Williams has been named to the US Olympic soccer team for the regional qualifying tournament that runs from Thursday through April 2. Williams will replace Josh Gatt, who was recalled by Molde FK, his club in Norway, pending his release from the Union. The US opens play against Cuba, then meets Canada Saturday and El Salvador Monday in Nashville. The semifinals and finals are set for Kansas City. Union midfielders Freddy Adu and Amobi Okugu are also on the US roster.

The top two teams in the CONCACAF region will qualify for the Olympic tournament, scheduled for July 25-Aug. 11 in Cardiff, Coventry, Glasgow, London, Manchester, and Newcastle. The US and Canada have advanced to the finals of the women's event.  Williams, who started both Union games this season, is due to join the US for a training session in Nashville Wednesday.  (Boston Globe  March 21, 2012)

  
The conference covered areas such as Fitness, Sports Science, Injury Rehabilitation and, of course, Coaching Methods. Running over two days, the program of events was both theoretical and practical, with coaching sessions also taking place at Lennoxtown Training Centre.

"We had the opportunity to watch Celtic FC Coaches run practices across all age groups", said Ainscough.  He added, "They were generous and gracious hosts, and shared extremely helpful information with us on how they conduct their training".   The club plans to continue to have Bolts coaches visit and work with Celtic FC, as we continue to implement best practices on an international level.

Elliott Pratt, CEO for the FC Greater Boston Bolts, announced that the Bolts will be joining other clubs in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Program in providing a ten-month schedule starting in September 2012. In doing so, they will join 28 current programs, as well as 48 others, making the same effort across the United States.  Brian Ainscough, Director of Coaching, further announced that FC Greater Boston is committed to continuing to provide a top-tier 6 Month Program for those soccer players who are unable to make the 10-Month Program commitment.

Ainscough continued “As always, the 6 Month Program will offer talented and committed soccer players the opportunity to be coached by the top coaches in the region; to participate in selective tournaments and showcase events; and to access our college planning program. We feel strongly that by offering two options, FC Greater Boston will continue to be able to attract and retain the best soccer players in the region, while giving players and families some flexibility in their choices.  We are extremely excited about the opportunities that this change will bring for our players in the years ahead and look forward to continuing to welcome top talent to the Bolts.”

Collectively, Development Academy clubs have taken action to focus on player development for the United States National Team and other professional opportunities.  Development Academy clubs will continue to provide the best environment for player development through meaningful competition and consistent team training. By implementing this format, clubs will be able to:

-Spend an increased amount of time with their players & focus on development both individually and within a team format

-Implement a singular coaching style following the U.S. Soccer Curriculum and Best Practices

-Travel for elite domestic and international tournaments throughout the entire year

-Follow a consistent cadence in the Academy schedule and focus on single fixture dates

“Going to a 10-month season is an important step in the evolution of elite player development,” said U.S. Soccer Youth Technical Director Claudio Reyna. “The format provides the ideal platform to place an increased emphasis on the value of training on a regular basis, and offers the opportunity to play in quality, competitive games throughout an extended season. This schedule puts our elite players in line with kids in their age group internationally, and places the appropriate physical demands at this stage in their development.”

Coach Ainscough will meet directly with Bolts teams in the weeks ahead to discuss the programs and provide additaional information which should help families decide the best option for their individual player.

Celtic FC, Scotland’s Premier League Side, and Bolts to Share Best Practices in Youth Development

NEWTON, MA (June 29, 2011) – FC Greater Boston Bolts, one of the country’ s premier youth soccer clubs, today announced an Academy Partnership with Celtic Football Club, the leading Glasgow-based side in Scotland’ s Premier League. The clubs will share best practices in the development of youth soccer players.

As part of this partnership, Celtic FC will send academy coaches to the US to spend time working with both Bolts’ players and coaches. Bolts’ coaches will also spend time in Glasgow to get a behind-the-scenes insight into how the club produces young players the Celtic Way. Some of the players will also be invited to spend time at the club’s Lennoxtown Training Centre to aid their development.

The U13 and U15 teams (pictured below) championship squads consisted solely of FC Greater Boston Bolts players. As part of their winter training program, these Bolts players participate in the futsal program run by Revere FC and Cesar Salazar. Coach Salazar also serves as head coach for the Bolts Boys U10 team.

The Tournament is run by United States Youth Futsal, considered to be the premier futsal league in this country. The winners of the regional tournaments are invited to participate in the United States Youth Futsal League’s National Championship, which will be held in Overland Park, Kansas from February 18-20, 2012.

From Bolts Coaching Director Brian Ainscough: "It was great to be there to see Revere FC win the U15 Futsal Championship. Congrats also to the U13 team on their success! Cesar did an excellent job with the teams. At FC Greater Boston we really encourage our players to play futsal; we believe our players make huge progress during the winter playing with Cesar. Good luck in Nationals!"

Two years after concluding his playing career with the New England Revolution, Jay Heaps, former Bolts player was named coach of the team. Bolts Boys Coaching Director Brian Ainscough knew that Jay Heaps was special when he had him as a player on the Bolts....now he knows Jay will succeed in his new role as Head Coach of the New England Revolution.

Brian Ainscough was right in his assessments about newly named New England Revolution head coach Jay Heaps as a player in the past. Now fans of the Revs will be hoping the Northeastern Huskies men’s soccer coach’s good judgment continues in his beliefs about Heaps as a coach.

Ainscough coached Heaps at the club level when the Massachusetts native played for the FC Greater Boston Bolts. The former Irish youth international knew Heaps had what it takes to be a successful professional player and wasn’t the least bit surprised by the career Heaps had.

"He was special," said Ainscough. "His competitiveness back then was unbelievable. His competitive spirit and his will to win were just amazing."

Heaps took that competitiveness to his 11-year career in Major League Soccer that included an MLS Rookie of the Year award in 1999 and four appearances of the U.S. National Team in 2009. He became etched in the history books as the longest ever tenured player on the Revolution with nine seasons that included four MLS Cup appearances, a U.S. Open Cup Championship and a SuperLiga Championship.

None of that surprised Ainscough. In 2005, Heaps joined Ainscough’s staff at Northeastern as a volunteer assistant coach. It was a role he would serve for two seasons. "He passed along his experiences to the players who had respect for him because he was such a quality player," said Ainscough.

The same qualities Ainscough admired in Heaps as a player came through in his coaching."The qualities that served him as a player and as a coach here were his passion and his competitive nature," said Ainscough. "They’re unmatched when I coached him years ago and when he was here coaching."

Ainscough has coached no shortage of players from the U.S. Soccer Olympic Development Program, Providence College, Bowdoin College, Northeastern and the Bolts, but Heaps competitiveness stood out above the rest.

"It’s unmatched by most players and I think that will serve him as well as a coach as it did as a player," said Ainscough.

COACHING STAFF

CHICAGO (June 4, 2011) – The National Soccer Hall of Fame inducted five new members in a ceremony that took place Saturday afternoon before the U.S. Men’s National Team’s match against Spain at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA. The 2011 Induction Class includes Cobi Jones, Eddie Pope and Earnie Stewart in the Player category, Bruce Murray as a Veteran and Bob Gansler as a Builder. The five were introduced on the field before the game, along with current members of the Hall of Fame.

Joining the players in this year’s class was veteran Bruce Murray, a midfielder and forward who was one of the leading stars of the U.S. Men’s National Team in the late 1980s and early 1990s. At the time of his retirement in 1993, he was the all-time leading scorer with 21 goals and the all-time leader in caps with 86 appearances. He is currently coaching at Carolina Elite Soccer Academy (CESA) in Greenville, S.C.

             

The U14 team played well but lost some tough games. The U18 boys showcase team came away with impressive wins against Baltimore Bays (MD) and Triangle FC (NC). There were plenty of college coaches scouting the games and watching our Bolts players perform at a high level. The weather was cooperative with temperatures in the 60’s and sunny skies. 

In attendance were the U12 boys, the U14 boys and the U18 boys teams. The U12 boys, coached by Jimmy Odierna, went undefeated against strong teams from Region I & II. A gutsy performance by our keeper and our shooters allowed us to secure a win on penalty kicks in the semi-finals against a strong team from Bethesda, MD. The Bolts went on to beat Ohio Premier in the finals to win the Jeff Cup (see picture to the right). Coach Ainscough, Coach Margolis and several of the U14 boys were at the game to support the U12 boys in the finals. It was a great way to start the season. The boys continued to excel in possession style play with many exciting moments on offense and defense.

• The Jefferson Cup averages 1100 applications for 550 +/- spots per year from around 35 states for entry into the event.
• In the past 4 Years, the Jefferson Cup turns down an average of over 500 teams per year.
• In 2009 the Jefferson Cup reached its highest ranking ever being ranked the #1 youth tournament for boys and #4 youth soccer tournament for girls in the United States.
• Each year the tournament draws an average of over 150 State Cup Champions, over 50 Regional Champions and over 5 National Champions per year throughout the nine age groups.
• Each year the tournament brings around 200 college coaches per weekend to scout the players participating.

COACHING CURRICULUM UNVEILED AT PLAYER DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT: U.S. Soccer Youth Technical Director Claudio Reyna presented the new U.S. Soccer Coaching Curriculum to more than 150 of the top youth leaders in the U.S. Soccer community on Wednesday. Reyna outlined key concepts of the new curriculum designed to improve development of players in the organized player base in the United States. The curriculum concentrates on creating more organized, age-appropriate training sessions, developing coaching practices and creating an environment that is fun for players.

MCBRIDE ADDS HIS EXPERIENCE: Former U.S. Men’s National Team forward Brian McBride provided insight into his experiences and discussed the importance of functional training in his development as a player. McBride delivered a talk to the summit entitled “The Value of Training” before leading an on-field session in front of gathered coaches.

PACO DE MIGUEL: Renowned fitness coach Paco de Miguel, considered the right hand man of Rafa Benitez, demonstrated how to create a professional training plan and apply it on the training field. de Miguel spoke to summit attendees in the morning, before leading the U-18 Men’s National Team in a training session Wednesday afternoon.

THEMES FROM THE SUMMIT: ussoccer.com delved into a few of the important themes from the Player Development Summit by talking to U.S. Soccer coaching staff on location in Oregon. The coaches talked about the process of bringing the curriculum together and also touched on the importance of training for player development.

SPARQ TO SHOWCASE ITS TRAINING PHILOSOPHY: On Thursday, SPARQ will display the latest methods in functional performance training, a practice critical to maximizing athletic potential in youth soccer players. SPARQ, Nike’s performance division and U.S. Soccer’s partner in performance and assessment, will reveal findings from SPARQ Testing of Development Academy and U.S. Youth National Team players, and provide coaches with an overview on how to effectively integrate physical conditioning work into their technical and tactical training programs. SPARQ Performance Director Paul Winsper will outline SPARQ’s training philosophy and methodology, while others from his team will share information derived from the athlete assessment that SPARQ and U.S. Soccer have been partnering on since 2008.

Prior to the appointment of Dacey, Tony Mohammed served as the Bolts’ Girls Director. Elliott Pratt, President of the FC Greater Boston, said of Mohammed: “We would like to thank Tony for his hard work and dedication as our Girls Director over the last two years. His professionalism and intelligence have helped us grow. We wish him the very best.”

The Bolts selected Sarah Dacey and Jessica Pfeifer (Director of the Girls Intiative) in May, 2010 to raise the bar on the girls side to match the high level of achievement currently enjoyed by the Bolts boys. In speaking about her new role, Dacey remarked, “I was extremely excited when this opportunity presented itself. I am eager to bring the girls back to prominence by working with Jess to promote our new strategic initiative. This will distinguish us from all other clubs in the country. I also look forward to being heavily involved with the players and parents on a day to day basis, and providing the best possible experience for our players.”

Dacey and Pfeifer will work in tandem. Dacey, who boasts extensive coaching experience at the both the youth and collegiate level has officially been named the Bolts’ Girls Director. Pfeifer, who will work in tandem with Dacey as Director of the Girls’ Initiative, possesses academic and professional experience relating to team and performance psychology amongst girls and women. In addition to their strong playing backgrounds that saw Dacey and Pfeifer star for the Bolts in the club’s heyday, their complimentary skills and perspectives are ideal for the new initiative. Collectively, the alumnae pledged, “we share a commitment and inner fire to bring the club back to the
level it was when we played in the 1990s.”

The Girls Initiative will be implemented with all FC Greater Boston Girls’ teams and is designed to empower girls as females, athletes, and active members of the soccer community and community-at-large. A revolutionary approach to girls’ club soccer, these goals will be advanced through the balanced integration of both athletic and personal commitment and achievement. The program will emphasize three major areas of personal development:

1) Engagement and Relatedness through a focus on team building and intra-club mentoring
2) Identity as Female Athletes through wellness programs, such as nutrition awareness and female focused strength training aimed at injury prevention
3) Empowerment of Girls as Leaders through community outreach opportunities as well as the allocation of qualified female coaches in every age group.

Sarah and Jessica co-coached the GU14 and U17 teams this past year. While working collaboratively with these teams, they recognized the ways in which the combination of their respective coaching philosophies blended to create an enriching and positive environment for the girls. In two seasons, the U14 girls went from placing 5th in Maple 2 to 3rd in Maple 1, while winning a nationally recognized tournament in the process. The U17 team, which suffered a winless record in the spring of 2009, rebounded to enjoy an undefeated season in Maple 2 the following year; the U17s are currently awaiting a promotion game to earn a place in Maple 1 for the 2011 season.

Pfeifer explains, “There are countless schools of thought regarding athletic development and performance excellence. The Girls Initiative curriculum was developed as a means through which to achieve athletic excellence and elite performance in conjunction with the promotion of healthy growth as girls and adolescents in today’s culture. It is my hope that this initiative will facilitate a kind of learning that will allow our players to excel at the highest and most competitive level of youth soccer. Still, more importantly, we aim to develop the skills that they will need to be confident, empowered females in the collegiate athletic arena, the classroom, the workforce, and their personal lives as young women.”

Brian Ainscough, Bolts’ Coaching Director, comments on Dacey and Pfeifer’s complementary skills: “In today’s era, youth sports and personal development can’t be separated, just as winning can’t be separated from character. Coaching today is more than just understanding the game of soccer. It is about developing the player as a person, making her or him more resilient. In turn, this builds strong teams with winning character. We know Sarah and Jessica will bring prominence back to our Girls side.”

Sarah started playing for the Bolts when she was 13, winning the national championship in 1994 at the age of 18. She was the MVP of the tournament. She was just coming off of her freshman year at the University of North Carolina where she started and won the NCAA national championship. She won the championship two more times in her illustrious career at UNC, once in 1994, and once in 1996. She was an offensive-minded player, playing for legendary coach Anson Dorrance. Before being recruited to UNC she played for Framingham High where she was a Parade NSCAA All American. She was also on the youth national team from 1991-1993. In addition to her storied soccer career, she played lacrosse at UNC where she led the team to two NCAA final fours. Upon graduation Sarah became an assistant at Boston College for both soccer and lacrosse.

She moved on to Providence in 1999 to be an assistant before coaching at University of Tennessee in 2000. Sarah commented on her travels, “coaching at three difference schools in three years was terrific as it exposed me to three different coaching styles, all successful. I was able to take the best from each program and build my own style.” After a brief coaching stint, the Women’s Professional League (WUSA) formed. She played for the Carolina Courage in 2001, and then the Boston Breakers in 2002 where she was a starter. In 2003 and 2004 she was the associate AD at the Faye School, and was also the soccer and lacrosse coach. In 2005 she became the head soccer and lacrosse coach at Babson College. She has coached for the New England Eagles, the Boston Blast, and has most recently been a coach over the last year for the Bolts. Sarah will also be an assistant at Boston College, where she will bring connections to current BC players and coaches to the Bolts coaching repertoire.

Pfeifer played for the Bolts from U10-U18 during which time the team won an impressive six state cups and gained recognition as one of the top 5 teams in the country. She also played for Newton North High School, winning the State Cup her sophomore year. Through her experience with the Bolts, she was recruited to Northeastern University in 2002. At Northeastern, she was a four year starter in the midfield, an All- Conference and All-New England selection. She was Captain her senior year and finished her collegiate career ranked third in points all time. From there, Pfeifer went on to obtain a Masters Degree in Sport Psychology from Boston University. She has been a member of the Applied Sports Psychology Association since 2008. Continuing her investment in and passion for soccer, Pfeifer was the assistant coach at Wellesley College in 2008 and coached for the New England Eagles for two years before returning to FCGB in 2008 where she has coached since.

She is currently a second year Doctoral Student studying Clinical Psychology and plans to focus her doctoral research on female development within athletic teams. To this end, she has worked as a Sport Psychology Consultant for several collegiate and youth athletic programs including her most recent work with Harvard University Women's Basketball, Hockey, and Crew teams during the 2009-10 athletic seasons.

FCGB top coaches and their top coaches will work together year round, each sharing their knowledge and experience. This will help with the development of our coaches and players. In addition, teams will train at times together and play friendlies that will help create an
environment for development and positive competition.

Brian Ainscough, the architect of this relationship, explains his
reasoning: "We want to work with good soccer people who have the same interests, who focus on player development and who has respect for the game. Bayside FC clearly fits this mould". John Mark Andrade, Bayside FC President said, "When Brian presented the opportunity to Bayside to affiliate with one of the elite clubs in the country it was something our Club could not pass up. Working alongside the Boston Bolts will prove to be a fantastic experience for both our players and staff." In addition, "Our affiliation will further enhance our player’s development and allow them exposure to the USSF Bolts Academy U-16 and U-18 teams. This affiliation, which is the first of its kind for a Rhode Island based Club, will positively impact the Bolts Academy program."

Coach Daley, the Bolts BU16 Academy coach and head coach of Providence, will be hands on with coaching education and player development. Bayside FC Bolts will gain great exposure from the new partnership, which will help Bayside attract the top players in their area. As an Academy club, it will help FCGB attract the top Bayside players for our Full Academy programs. We also plan to host joint tournaments throughout the year.

We look forward to working together to develop players and continue the great tradition both Clubs have for years to come."
