Bolts’ 18 boys headed to Greensboro, USSDA Playoffs

In the most prestigious and competitive league in the United States, Bolts’ U17/18 US Soccer Development Academy is the only team in New England to make the USSDA playoffs, and one of 32 teams nation-wide.

Brian Ainscough, Bolts’ coaching director elaborates.  “This accomplishment demonstrates the quality of our program.  This includes both the coaches and players’ abilities and commitment.”

Craig Stewart, co-head coach, mentions that “It was one of our team goal’s at the beginning of the season to advance to the play offs in Greensboro, to accomplish this is a credit to all the boys who have been involved and is well deserved if you look at our body of work over the course of the year.”

JOHN BURRILL
1943  --  2009

It is with deep sadness that we must inform the BOLTS family that our club co-founder, John Burrill, passed away on March 29.

John started the Greater Boston BOLTS soccer club in 1986, along with a handful of other dedicated youth soccer enthusiasts.  Just 8 short years later, in 1994, John coached the GU19 BOLTS to Massachusetts' first ever USYSA National Championship.  In 1997, after John had built the BOLTS organization into a nationally-recognized leader in the youth soccer world, he resigned from the club to pursue other ambitions.

Soon thereafter, John was appointed Executive Director of Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association, where he imparted his impressive leadership to growing and organizing the state association into one of national prominence.  Among other accomplishments, John championed the effort to negotiate, purchase, design, and build Progin Park, made up of 16 top quality, Citizen's Bank soccer fields.  The field complex opened in 2008, and in July 2009, John's dream to host the USYSA National Championships will be realized.

Starting with the BOLTS club, John Burrill was dedicated to advancing the sport of soccer, and providing meaningful opportunities for the beautiful game to Massachusetts' youth players.  His initiative, unyielding energy, and effective leadership will be greatly missed.

FCGB Alum Videira Returns from Overseas
December 30, 2008
The former Noble and Greenough School standout and FC Greater Boston product signed with Hamilton Academical of the Scottish Premier League in August, but was plagued by injuries during his stint and didn’t make a first-team appearance for the club before being released in mid-December.

“When we drafted Michael last year, we were aware of his desire to play abroad,” said Revolution Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns in a club statement. “However, we’re pleased to add him to our roster now that he’s joined Major League Soccer.”

An attacking midfielder and a product of Milford, Videira played his college soccer at Duke, where he was a three-time semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy (2005, 2006, 2007) and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) third-team All-America selection in both 2006 and 2007.

In 80 career games with the Blue Devils, Videira scored 17 goals and added 15 assists. As a senior in 2007, he played in 16 games, notching three goals and two assists while battling a leg injury. He is also a former member of the U.S. Under-18 and Under-20 National Teams and he played club soccer for the FC Greater Boston Bolts.

Former Bolt Starts for UNC
December 22, 2008
CHICAGO – Last year, Sheanon Williams was playing matches with the US Under-17 National Team. Last Sunday, Williams, who was born in Boston and played with the FC Greater Boston Bolts, started as a freshman for North Carolina in the College Cup. Alas, the Tar Heels fell to the Terrapins, 1-0, in the national title game at Pizza Hut Park in Texas, but Williams and a slew of others in the title game shared one trait: they all played for US Development Academy clubs. read more

Development Academy Winter Showcase Roundup
December 09, 2008
The 15/16 and 17/18 FCGB boys returned from the first showcase of the 2008-2009 season early Tuesday morning. It was held in Lancaster, California. Overall the trip was a great success. Brian Ainscough, FCGB coaching director, talks about the trip:

"Our boys just finished their high school season and had not played in a league match yet. We played teams like the LA Galaxy who had already played 10 regular season games. For us, we viewed this tournament similar to how we view pre-season…

We were very happy with how our teams played at the tournament and we are encouraged with what we saw. We are in a good place heading into our regular season.”

The 18 boys had a stellar tournament. The first game ended in a 2-2 tie against the LA Galaxy. The second and third games against Washington Premier and Metro United were 4-2 and 3-1 victories, respectively. Ainscough doted on both teams’ success:

“The 18's obviously had a terrific showing winning two games and tying one. With the 16's we had a lot of new faces and they carried themselves very well. They were a bit unlucky hitting crossbars and posts throughout the tournament, losing while outshooting teams.”

As Ainscough mentioned, the 16 boys also played very well. The first game ended in a 1-3 loss to the LA Galaxy. The 16’s tied Washington Premier in their second game, 1-1, and suffered a tough unfortunate 0-1 loss in their third game against Metro United. Overall, the coaches are happy with the outcome of the tournament. Brian sums up his thoughts by saying, “Both teams are where we want them to be heading into winter training and the regular season.”

Both teams will be back to practice later this week. The regular season starts in February. As always, you can keep up to date with our teams’ progress on our website, and on this weekly roundup.
